The observation window is the weak point of every shielding barrier — the one part that has to be seen through. Lead glass closes that opening without breaking the room's calculated protection.
The thickness and lead equivalence of the glass are not picked from a catalogue; they follow from the calculation in the radiation protection section of the investment design — from the type of equipment, the workload and the layout of adjacent rooms.
The range
Corning offers several families of shielding glass for different levels of attenuation.
- Corning Med-X — for observation windows in hospitals and smaller practices
- Corning Med-X LT — a thinner laminated version
- Corning Supercontryx — for heavy shielding
- Blanks for radiation protection eyewear
Where it is installed
The glass is used wherever visual observation through a protective barrier is required.
- Fixed windows between the X-ray room and the control area
- Mobile barriers and protective panels
- Interventional cardiology and angiography rooms
- CT and radiotherapy rooms
- Research laboratories and industrial inspection
